The Cancer Prevention and Control Program (CPCP)
works closely with individuals, organizations, and communities to
encourage and make possible cancer prevention, early detection, and
appropriate care for those diagnosed with cancer. The CPCP has
many current projects, in which research findings are used for planning,
monitoring, and evaluating cancer prevention and detection activities
throughout the state. We are committed to finding solutions to
ease the burden of cancer affecting our residents.

Cervical Cancer in South Carolina
December 9, 2009
University of South Carolina public-health researchers will discuss the
impact of cervical cancer in South Carolina at a media availability at
10:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 10.
The impact, along with solutions through research and community
screening programs, is part of a comprehensive report that will be
reviewed by Drs. Saundra Glover and Heather Brandt, researchers at the
Arnold School of Public Health. The report also addresses the racial
disparities in cervical-cancer deaths among African-American and white
women, community programs for Hispanic women, the role of the human
papillomavirus (HPV) in cervical cancer and access to care for
low-income women.
The media availability will take place in the fourth-floor conference
room of the Public Health Research Center, 921 Assembly St.
The Arnold School report is timely, given recent controversy over new
guidelines for cervical-cancer screening that were released last month
by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
